Project Sunrise is proud to have received the Community Award from Wyndham Women’s Magazine in 2023, recognised for outstanding service to women, families, and young people across the Wyndham community.
Wyndham Women’s Magazine is a publication dedicated to empowering women of all backgrounds across one of Melbourne’s most diverse and fastest-growing communities. The award acknowledges organisations that have made a meaningful, tangible difference to the lives of Wyndham residents.
Serving Wyndham’s African Australian Community
Wyndham — encompassing suburbs including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, and Tarneit — is home to one of Victoria’s largest and most vibrant African Australian communities. Project Sunrise has deep roots here, with a dedicated team providing culturally safe AOD recovery support to young people aged 12–34 and their families.
Our Wyndham-based work recognises that recovery does not happen in isolation. When a young person is struggling with substance use, the entire family and community network is affected. That is why our workers engage not just with clients, but with parents, siblings, community elders, and local organisations to build wraparound systems of support.
Centring Women and Families in Recovery
A core part of Project Sunrise’s work in Wyndham has been supporting African Australian women and mothers navigating the complexities of raising young people in a new country, often without extended family networks, while managing their own cultural transition and wellbeing.
Our Wyndham programs include dedicated family counselling, parenting support, and community education sessions designed to give mothers and families the language, knowledge, and confidence to support young people at risk.
- Family counselling and mediation services
- AOD education sessions for parents and carers
- Cultural community gatherings and healing circles
- Warm referrals to housing, legal, and financial support services
- School engagement programs for young people aged 12–18

“This recognition means the world to our team. We show up every single day for these families — not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. Being seen and acknowledged by the Wyndham community reinforces why this work matters.”
