Nominated for Community Engagement Award at We Are Brimbank Awards 2024

Project Sunrise was proudly nominated for the Community Engagement Award at the 2024 We Are Brimbank Awards, held on Thursday, 23 May 2024 at a gala ceremony organised by Brimbank City Council.

The We Are Brimbank Awards celebrate the exceptional contributions, hard work, and determination of individuals, organisations, and community groups across the Brimbank area. The Community Engagement Award recognises those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to fostering connections, promoting inclusivity, and empowering others to participate in community life.

A Milestone for African Australian Communities

Being nominated among Brimbank’s leading community organisations is a testament to the meaningful, on-the-ground work Project Sunrise delivers every day. The Brimbank and Melton region is one of three priority service regions for Project Sunrise, home to a large and growing African Australian community.

Our team of specialist AOD workers has been embedded in the Brimbank community since the program launched — attending events, hosting education sessions, and building the trust that makes genuine recovery possible. This nomination reflects the community’s recognition of that sustained commitment.

Community Engagement at the Heart of Our Work

Project Sunrise takes a community-first approach to alcohol and other drug recovery. Rather than waiting for young people to come to us, our workers go where the community already gathers — cultural events, schools, community centres, and places of worship — to build relationships before crisis hits.

  • Delivered over 20 community education sessions on AOD-related harm across Brimbank
  • Partnered with local schools and youth services to provide early intervention support
  • Hosted cultural healing circles for young people and their families
  • Connected dozens of young people to free, confidential counselling and case management
